Nebraska, California National Guard units honor WWII Veteran
May 11, 2023 — Members of the Nebraska Air National Guard’s 173rd Air Refueling Squadron flew to California to take 100-year-old WWII veteran James K. Kunkle on an honorary flight refueling F-15 Eagles with the 144th Fighter Wing, California Air National Guard, to thank him for his service and recognize his lineage to the Nebraska and California Air National Guard... World War II veteran James K. Kunkle lays in the back of a KC-135 boom pod and watches the boom operator refuel an F15-C Eagle from the 114th Fighter Wing, Fresno, California, April 25, 2023. Kunkle served as a U.S. Army Air Corps pilot during World War II and flew P-38 and P-57 aircraft, receiving the Distinguished Service Cross for engaging 20 German aircraft and downing two of them.

155th Air Refueling Wing at the Central Coast AirFest

The 155th Air Refueling Wing presented their KC-135R Stratotanker with a heritage paint scheme at the Central Coast AirFest, held at Santa Maria Airport in California on Sept. 21-22, 2024. The aircraft was part of the static display.

The AirFest had a special guest—101-year-old James Kunkle, a World War II fighter pilot. The heritage paint scheme on the KC-135 was specifically modeled after the markings on Kunkle’s own P-38 Lightning, the aircraft he flew during combat missions in WWII. Kunkle is the last surviving pilot of the 401st Fighter Squadron, which went on to become the 173rd Air Refueling Squadron.
