Nebraska, California National Guard units honor WWII Veteran

World War II veteran James K. Kunkle lays in the back of a KC-135 boom pod and watches the boom operator refuel an F15-C Eagle from the 114th Fighter Wing, Fresno, California, April 25, 2023. Kunkle served as a U.S. Army Air Corps pilot during World War II and flew P-38 and P-57 aircraft, receiving the Distinguished Service Cross for engaging 20 German aircraft and downing two of them.

Airmen assigned to the 155th Air Refueling Wing participated in a Combat Readiness Exercise at the Nebraska National Guard air base in Lincoln, Nebraska, June 6-8, 2025. The exercise tested the deployment readiness and supporting infrastructure of the installation to support wartime operations by assessing Airmen on performance-based tasks critical to mission readiness, such as facilitating the repair and maintenance of vital runway infrastructure, deployment of critical mission support infrastructure, enemy deterrence, perimeter security, unmanned aircraft deterrence, establishment of essential communications, and hot pit aircraft refueling.
